What a heart wrenching book. There are so many things i loved about this book i just don't know where to start. I loved the way the book was written and how Daré wrote Adunni’s POV in a way she would realistically speak as an uneducated, poor village girl in Nigeria, it made the book much more intriguing and fun to read, especially as a Yoruba girl myself!! I also really liked the facts at the start of the later chapters, it was very interesting!!

I truly loved Adunni and words cannot describe the hurt i felt towards her. But at the same time, i felt so inspired by her!! Despite being failed by most of the adults in her life and
being raped and sexually assaulted TWICE (I hope Big Daddy and Morufu burn in the DEEPEST PITS IN HELL)
she was still so hopeful and enthusiastic for her future. Seeing her constantly speak her mind regardless of her position in society and advocate for young girls like her who are also marginalised in Nigeria was so heartwarming. Her progressing her mindset to start uplifting herself and further pushing herself was my favourite bit about this book.
( Also I just wanted to point out how i love how caring and protective Adunni is about her family, especially her younger brother and its so sweet how she still loves her father despite him selling her)

Overall, i give this book a whopping 5 stars, it really didnt feel like i was reading 312 pages!!

This had been on my list awhile and picked it up because there was no wait at the library. Adunni’s Story, her-story, pulls you in from the first page. Her nonstandard English at first took me a minute to adjust to but it quickly felt familiar from when I traveled and worked in Nigeria in 2010-2013. That was just before the events in the book and I appreciated the author placed this in present day with the talk of the Presidential race and the abduction of the Chibok girls by Boko Haram. Adunni’s Story may be fictional but it is very real and happening to girls and women today. I loved Adunni’s transformation in the book and the help she gets along the way. The author still left some things unresolved which I thought was good. It’s a fast read but definitely not an easy read.
