Initial reaction: I love the message of the story. And I was really rooting for Adunni and her resilient spirit.  But I had some problems with the pacing, especially towards the end. I feel like we could’ve gotten so much more out of Adunni’s character development and especially with Miss Tia’s relationship but I feel like it was paced too quickly. It made a very beautiful, liberating relationship just seem very forced and confusing. basically as soon as we transition from Ikati to Lagos, the Lagos portion just felt…off.

I am sure this will sound like slander to most, but this book was difficult to get through for me. It was a bit slow-paced for my liking. I know it stands for important things, and for that, I appreciate it. However, I did not really enjoy this book.

I did not enjoy this book.

Firstly, it was incredibly dark. It was page after page of sorrow, abuse and trauma. There was a bit of light offered at the end, but for me it didn't offset how challenging the rest of the book was.

This book captures the harrowing experience of those in modern day slavery, and it is indeed harrowing. If you want a book to enjoy, this is not it.

Secondly, there were so many issues raised in this book that were unresolved. Without spoiling what they are, questions raised about her life at home, work and associates remain unresolved.

It took me months to finish this book because it was so bleak. I can't honestly recommend.

Beautiful, such wonderful language and such a lovable main character. I adored this book. I listen to the audiobook and the narration was excellent.

Uplifting but in flashes shot through what is a sad story of continual abuse and neglect. Adunni is dedicated to getting an education and will stop at nothing, which makes her an admirable heroine for young readers. It's written in dialect, which I found a bit challenging BUT that is not meant as a criticism of the author or Daré's use of dialect; it made the story much richer.
