Nice and easy read. Delightful and fun. Different from what I usually read, but I liked this one.
I needed a book that was going to be light, fun, and not be about work and I knew that Jenny Colgan would be good for that. And since I'm still on hold for the new one, I thought I would check the shelves at the library for the ones I missed. I really want some fresh bread now though, not enough to make it myself, but enough to hit up the local coffee shop for some of their yummies.
The story was ok, but the writing was a real struggle to get through.
I listened to the audiobook, and that took away some of the charm of this book for me. The narrator is an eloquent, older British woman narrating for a cheeky, 30-something baker, and the voice didn’t align with the character. Her male voices were also off-putting.
As far as the story, I liked the characters and character growth. There were some pieces that confused me. I thought for a minute that the vet was going to be a love interest because we jump into his head and hear him think about how pretty Polly is, but it never goes anywhere. I also found the line about wanting to bury her head in his chest hair to be bizarre. Overall though, it’s a good story and I enjoyed it.

objectively not the best book but the setting was so magical
Selbstgebackenes Brot und sein Duft hat für mich einen ganz besonderen Zauber. Dementsprechend neugierig wurde ich auch beim Lesen des Klappentextes, klang es doch so als würde Backen da eine relativ große Rolle spielen.
Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Nicht nur ist das Backen von Brot wichtig, nein, es gibt am Ende des Buches auch noch Rezepte dazu. Was sehr gut ist, denn die Lektüre von dem Buch macht einem so richtig Lust darauf selbst zu backen.
Und außerdem Neil, der Papageientaucher, der heimliche Star des Buches. Er spielt zwar für die Handlung keine sonderlich große Rolle, ist dafür aber umso niedlicher und liebenswerter.
Aber auch mal vom Brot und dem Vogel abgesehen war das Buch eine positive Überraschung und weitaus weniger klischeehaft liebesromanartig, als ich im Vorfeld erwartet hatte.
Polly ist mir unendlich sympathisch gewesen und ich habe mich auch durchaus etwas mit ihr identifizieren können. Aber auch die anderen Charaktere sind zum großen Teil sehr glaubwürdig gezeichnet – naja bis auf Reuben, der doch etwas eindimensional ist – und es macht einfach Spaß zu lesen, wie sich Polly nach und nach ein Leben auf der Insel aufbaut und sich von den Ereignissen in ihrer Vergangenheit erholt.
Natürlich kommt auch die Liebe nicht zu kurz und es kommt hier auch etwas zu einem Liebesdreieck. Allerdings entwickeln sich alle Beziehungen sehr natürlich und recht langsam, so dass es wirklich überzeugend und passend ist.
Gut, Polbearne (die Insel, auf die Polly umzieht) ist etwas zu idyllisch um so wirklich existieren zu können, aber genau das trägt auch irgendwie zu dem Zauber des Buches bei. Außerdem habe ich durch das Buch gelernt, was eine Gezeiteninsel ist und das klingt unheimlich faszinierend.
Eine schöne Wohlfühl-Geschichte mit überwiegend tollen Figuren, die zwar nicht immer ganz realistisch ist, dafür aber auch nicht davor zurück schreckt ernstere Themen anzusprechen. Es ist übrigens der erste Band einer Reihe, aber mit abgeschossener Handlung. Trotzdem freue ich mich schon auf weitere Geschichten aus Polbearne.

Jenny Colgan always delivers with light, well-written stories set in Scotland or the UK, in this case Cornwall, England.
Not my fav chick lit. I liked hearing about the baking but this protagonist was painful. No depth. And the romance wasn’t great either. Just all very blah. I liked the setting of the town so it gets 2 stars.

A bit overlong and a real stretch in plausibility at times, but that's part of the fun. After I read and enjoyed The Bookshop on the Corner, I wanted to read more of Jenny Colgan's stuff and I found much of the same: a young woman forced to change when the business that she runs with her boyfriend goes bust. Bankrupt, with no vehicle and no job, she decides to "take a pause" when one of the only affordable places she can find to rent happens to be on a stormy island with no passage to the mainland during high tides. From there she starts to put her life back together, meeting various men and turning her passion for baking into a career.
This was perfect for reading on a vacation day in the hammock and I would suggest it for any beach/plane/vacation reading needs (if you like chick lit, which I do).
