Polly feels like her life is falling apart. The company that she created with her boyfriend Chris, has failed, and despite her best efforts, they have to declare bankruptcy. Not only has Polly lost her business, the life style that she is used to, and the smart, modern flat where they live, but she has lost her self-confidence and her relationship is all but over. Desperately looking for an apartment she can actually afford on the meager sum allowed to her, Polly discovers a flat for rent in the island town of Polbearne. When she arrives, the flat is a mess, sunlight can be seen through the roof, and the town is tiny and rundown. But looking out at the ocean, Polly feels a sense of calm settle over her, and despite her friend's protests, she decides to take the plunge and move to this quiet village.
Once there, Polly begins baking again, one of her favorite hobbies. She finds it relaxes her and there is no decent bread to be found in the whole town. And that's how it all starts. Polly begins baking for the town, meeting new people, and finding a new place and happiness in this little village.
I so enjoyed this book. Polly is courageous in her decisions to start a new life, and generous with her friendship and baking. I loved the community of the fishing village and the descriptions of it and its inhabitants. Polly has a wry sense of humor, and the interactions between her and the other characters in this book feel real and interesting. I really like that Polly has a close girl friend and that they support each other no matter what. And the sense of community in Polbearne and the descriptions of its daily life are just wonderful.
Colgan also creates a sort of love letter to baking, as she writes about Polly's adventures in bread baking and other delicious creations. I could practically taste the loaves of bread she baked. Mmm, I want some now! It's very like the love she showed for books and shared with her readers in The Bookshop on the corner. Colgan has a way of making her characters' passions and loves come to life and reach out to embrace the reader.
3.5 Stars. I want to take a vacation to Polbearne and eat some of Polly's bread.

This was a fun and enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to reading more Beach Street Bakery books. FYI, has some swears.

I have a feeling that maybe I had read this before. It felt familiar. It's strange that a bird is the most loveable character.

A perfectly unoffensive piece of fluff: predictable, cosy, and relaxing. Made me want to bake. And shudder at the thought of a Star Wars themed wedding.
