Jenny Colgan has a line of similar books based around a main character and her cooking career, and it is easy for them to merge together when trying to recall them. However I would say this is my favourite book so far. I think this was because a lot of the book was about Polly by herself, and so there wasn't quite as many side characters - in previous books, the shops the main characters run have a lot of regulars and, especially in the books which have sequels, they can become stereotypical.

In this book, Polly spends a lot of time settling into her new town, and the baking of bread to begin with is more of a subplot. I liked this because it also gave her a believable amount of time to develop her skills! It also meant she slowly met the characters of the town and it was nice to see the relationships develop. I thought the relationship plot lines were still a little contrived, which is why I rated the book 4* instead of 5*, but overall I did enjoy the book.

A great read for a week at the lake - likeable characters, charming town, romance, etc - but not a favorite of the year.

My best friend bought me this book for my birthday so I was excited to read it and see what kind of books she thought I was in to! I have to admit that it was a bit slow to get going but when it did it made for a very exciting and unpredictable read.
Polly and her long term boyfriend Chris separate when their joint business fails. Left with no job, no boyfriend and nowhere to live Polly settles for a neglected, unloved property above an unused bakery in a place where you have to wait for the tide to go out to simply get home. What feels like miles away from her best friend Kerensa and her life in Plymouth Polly convinces herself that the move is only temporary. However once she takes in poorly puffin Neil, made friends with some fisherman and a mysterious American bee keeper Huck, she starts to look at her new life differently.

I really liked the great sense of community at Mount Polbearne and the fact that everyone knew each other and were friends, made it sounds like somewhere I would like to live!
The one thing I would say I found a bit annoying was Neil the puffin. Although at first I thought he was a unique and funny character it did seem a bit unrealistic and rather silly for her to carry him around with her all the time. I really liked the character of Kerensa, the total opposite of Polly and someone I thought I would get along with! Reuben was just ridiculous but I couldn't help having a soft spot for him.
Overall my best friend did a good job and I thoroughly enjoyed this! Ii would recommend it to fellow chick lit lovers and anyone who just fancies a light hearted, comical read.

I really enjoyed this novel. Especially the second half with some of the more serious undertones.
I loved Polly’s puffin and her love for him. It was so sweet and funny.
This book also made me very hungry with all of the bread and baking! It made me want to go back to Cornwall as soon as possible as I think it did well to capture the essence of Cornwall.

It had a good plot and unexpected parts i really liked. One event was so unrealistic, cheesy, and out of place that it ruined it for me so I wouldn't recommend this book. I also didn't like the points of view switches throughout.

Very much chicklit but the seaside setting fitted with where I was on holiday so a nice and quick read.
Noticed some mistakes in the writing though (SPAG)

I feel like I can always count on Jenny Colgan for a great read. Her books always draw me in and make me happy. I love the cozy small town setting and of course all the baking going on! Chick-lit is a genre that I'm very picky about. I consider Colgan's books to be an excellent example of this genre.

I love to bake, so I'm a tad partial to this book and the story of opening a bakery. It was a fun read.

(EXCEPT FOR THE PART ABOUT ADOPTING THE PUFFIN! WHO DOES THAT?!?!)

This was predictable and formulaic, but that is exactly what I wanted right now. I needed a super easy romance that I could breeze through and this book definitely fit the bill!
Oddly, there were a couple of spelling and punctuation errors, but they can be easily overlooked. I also didn't love the main character's romance - I didn't feel much chemistry between them and the ending felt sudden.
However, this book has all the classic, cosy features- woman whose life has all gone wrong moves to a cut-off, cutesy island and turns her life around by suddenly becoming extremely successful baking bread. Knowing the vague plot, you can pretty much write the book yourself, but it is an easy, fluffy read.
