I really enjoyed the the second and third part of the book. It is not only beautifully written but also so true and the reader is able to understand the thought process of the narrator very well. It reminds us of what happened but it also gives us an insight. One that we probably did not ask for but we got anyway. It shows that even people working in concentration camps, responsible for the deaths of many, are human. We often do not consider this while talking about the past and the people involved. We label them as monsters and bad human beings when in reality they are just like us, among us, humans. I am not saying that anything can justify or defend their actions but it is an important thing to consider before judging someone.

[LITTLE SPOILER]

Hannas illiteracy is something that at first I felt weird about. It did not go with the story for me. However after thinking about it for a while I feel like it helps to sympathise with her a lot. She is so ashamed. Not only for her actions during the second world war but also for her illiteracy. In fact she is so ashamed she takes much more blame upon her than she would have to just to keep her illiteracy a secret.

I actually really loved this book. I’ve never watched the movie and I don’t think I ever will. I will admit I sobbed at the end. I definitely recommend but it’s not for the people who don’t like taboo subjects. 5/5
