A really wonderful book. I loved the utter mundanity contrasted with the fantastical at the beginning. Just a husband and wife going on their honeymoon to a tourist location: The Tower of Babel. I think Bancroft does a great job in world building with the tower. That was definitely my favorite part. I was right with Senlin, awestruck at the Tower this monumental invention. As the plot moved on, my sense of wonder decreased and it became more of a regular fantasy story but still... the characters are great, the plot is suspenseful and engaging and I really am in love with the setting.
I hope the second book can keep up that balance of a good adventure without losing that sense of uniqueness given by it's setting. It could very easily turn into generic political drama.

I bought this like 12 years ago, got a decent way through, and then set it down and never looked back. This book is so weird. I don’t even know if I really liked it, but this time I could not put it down and now I need to find the sequel. I legitimately never really knew what was coming next. Extensive and immersive world-building. It got real bleak at times, though, so I am not surprised that I had to be in the right mood to finish it.

Fine, but a bit too violet for my preference
