This book threw me for a loop. It had moments of non-spicy romance, fantasy, adventure, thriller, humor, dark horror, and even swashbuckling. Set in a secondary flintlock world, Tom Senlin loses his wife Marya on their honeymoon to the Tower of Babel. We watch Senlin’s journey to find her in this bizarre tower and his considerable growth as a character as he climbs. He meets many side characters along the way, and no one is what they seem. This book was fascinating and I never lost interest as I flipped pages. Check trigger warnings, but if you like unlikable and ambiguous characters, and often quite dark narrative, I’d recommend this book. It is first in a series of four and I can’t wait for the next installment.
I immersion read this book and I enjoyed the narrator’s , John Banks, performance considerably.

Very much in love with Josiaha's worldbuilding ability. This story is so unique in the way that it is able to balance a lighthearted playfulness while also being dark and gruesome while somehow in a steampunk universe and also the tower of babel is an actual thing? Crazy.
