Thank you, Kodansha Comic for giving me the opportunity to review He's Expecting Volume 1.

This manga was very interesting as the author (Eri Sakia was able to provide perspective of what would happen if men were able to get pregnant, more importantly, the manga was able to give heartful moments, and gender bender, and more importantly, a cool aspect of role reverse as men who are experiencing the pregnancy go through the emotion of doubt, scared, wanting to balance (Work/Mom lifestyle), wanting equal right's, etc. I love the inclusion of different characters dealing with the reality of male pregnancy while touching on important topics like (teen - pregnancy, Mom/work balance, etc.)
#HesExpecting #NetGalley. #HesExpecting #NetGalley. #HesExpecting #NetGalley.

This was a very good manga, thank you to myself for buying it for my birthday *gives a hug*.

In this manga we follow a man who is pregnant, yep, welcome to a world where men can get pregnant. However, it is still not really socially accepted (they are often seen as gay or feminine) and we see how our MC goes through many emotions, figuring out if he should keep the baby or not? Then what about his work, what about other men who are pregnant or have kids? I loved seeing him get stronger with each page. Get more comfortable being pregnant, I loved that he was looking forward to his kid as the time neared.

However, it was at times a bit confusing as I thought it was just about the guy being pregnant, but it also shows other people and their pregnancies/abortions and how the general populace feels about male pregnancies.

I am happy I read this one. I would definitely recommend it!

So in this world men can now have babies too but it happens far less than the other way around.

The main character decides the world doesn't respect or know enough about men who get prego. So he opens up a place for Men who get pregnant and work through it together. This leads to most chapters being about other characters and all linking to him eventually. It's enjoyable and covers a lot of pregnant issues and joys on both ends. It ends with a huge time skip which was interesting, and wonder how they'll continue.

A 3.5 but I'll bump it to a 4.

I almost didn’t pick up this advanced reader copy, because I thought it couldn’t possibly be sensitive about the subject, but that is exactly what it was. In a world of the near future, men in Japan get pregnant when they have sex, 10% of the time, instead of the woman. This has been happening, in this story, for about 10 years, but it is still rare.

So when Kentaro gets pregnant he thinks it would be just as easy to abort. But apparently there is no easy way to do this, so after some consideration, he decides to keep the baby, but change society by starting a cafe for men who have given birth or will do so. So that they don’t get stigmatized.

And in the story, women whose husbands get pregnant suddenly realize what morning sickness is really like.

It is funny, in bits, but quite thoughtful as well, and I enjoyed reading about this world that the author created.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out the 7th of November 2023.

Why did it feel like that was something that was NEEDED? I thought I was going to read something completely silly and went with an open mind, and then, it was thoughtful and feminist and emotional. I'm baffled.

This was a fun and quirky read, for sure. I enjoyed the multiple POVs, as it made it possible to see several different perspectives of how birth affects each character in a particular circumstance. You get to see how the experiences change within each family dynamic and that was very cute. However, I did not enjoy Kentaro's actions regarding the mother of his child. He gave her absolutely no room for discussion and was then hurt when she followed his lead with that in the bonus chapter. There are also several topics such as self-harm that are mentioned, seemingly without proper work up or context.

For this to be set up to be a series, I'm not sure how that will be accomplished. This feels more like a one shot and definitely should have stopped at the first bonus content. The last bonus felt like it was added in because they forgot that they intended to have another volume and therefore needed to create the context to draw you back in.

Thank you, NetGalley! That was an enjoyable ARC.

He's Expecting is the kind of realistic manga that I love. In this world, male pregnancy has become a reality, although it only affects a very small portion of the population. When salaryman Kentaro suddenly discovers he's pregnant, he learns more about how pregnant men are treated, and fights against the stigmas given to other men in his situation. It's an interesting take, and I love how Eri Sakai touches on how realistic this situation would be, such as the need for C-sections and surgery for abortions. There is also quite a lot of commentary on Japanese society and how pregnancy is viewed as well. One of the side chapters touches on a husband who really needs a reality check when he becomes pregnant and mopes around. Overall, really enjoyed this one, and looking forward to seeing what characters are featured in volume 2 now that Kentaro's story is basically finished.

This was a really fun manga. I was expecting it to be just a silly little manga but this manga actually deals with some important and serious topics. There is plenty of humor mixed in as well but this is overall a solid and serious manga. Definitely give it a read!
