Memoirs of Cleopatra, oh how I love you, let me count the ways. Well for starters, I have read this book twice, which says a lot considering how long it is. It is beautifully written, completely sucks you in and you do not want to put it down. There is a war scene that drags a bit but other than that, this book is flawless. I'll never forget about Marc Anthony having eyelashes that "only camels and dancing girls were supposed to have, not Roman generals." My fav quote in the book, as shallow as that is! It made me laugh. ❤ This is a book not to miss.
4 STARS
"The story of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile. This saga of ambition, power and passion is told in the first person, from the queen's earliest memories of her father's tenuous rule to her own reign over one of the most glittering kingdoms in the world." (From Amazon)
This was a long read but worth the time and effort. Very greatly detailed and researched yet a good story.

I first read Memoirs of Cleopatra back in summer 2006. At the time, I had just transitioned to a new boarding school, and this was one of the novels that a classmate had recommended at my previous school.
Additionally, not only does Cleopatra hold sentimental value to me, but it also holds the distinction of being the first Margaret George novel I have ever read.
This being said, 4.5 stars – 4 for being well-written and thoroughly researched, and .5 stars for the sentimental place this book holds in my heart.

It was difficult for me to get through because there are many parts of it that felt like they could have been shortened. I enjoyed the book a lot, though!
I really enjoyed this book. It made her so real. Not just the figure we see in busts, on coins, but a real, before her time, empowered, and powerful woman. The fact that she was so powerful at that time, is extremely impressive. There's a lot of fluff in this book, but it also goes a long way toward explaining how she may have gained some of it.
I read this book many years ago and it holds up as one of the highlights in historical fiction. Cleopatra's life was a huge undertaking, with lots of gaps in the historical record that needed filling. Ms. George does a good job balancing fact and fiction and the result is a colorful, memorable read that is fun to just get lost in.
