This was a lot of knowledge to imprint upon my brain. I loved it and am a firm believer that Cleopatra deserved to live.
A stunning novel by Margaret George.
The definition, precision, the concise details are all to her credit as an author. She is a most thorough researcher and unlike most historical fiction novels, the facts are very, very sound.
The beginning is slow and frustrates the reader; it takes time to adjust to the specific style of writing employed by George. The ending, too seems stretched and forced out; George could have sacrificed historical accuracy for precision and a more eloquent ending. The never ending journey to the end does annoy. All in all, this still remains an amazing book. 3 and a half stars to Margaret George!
Not a well-written book, but captivating and entertaining nonetheless.
Incredibly well researched and well written. Such a fascinating time of history.

I tried. I can't force myself to waste more precious time on a book I'm not interested in. After a little over 100 pages in, I threw in the towel. I'm the third person I know who couldn't get very far in this book. I'm sure there are much better reads about the infamous Cleopatra VII.
It was a entertaining book with some great historical facts around a fictional story. However, it could have been about 200 pages shorter!
This book was a tradition for me to read each summer. I relished school getting out and lounging in the pool, day by day, and reading through these pages. It took the whole summer to read, too, because this book is a monster.
After graduating college, I stopped reading this book every summer. But I still pick it up time to time and read my favorite passages.
If you have any interest at all in Queen Cleopatra, you will love this book. However, if you're like me, after reading this book any other book about her will be ruined for you. Nothing really can compare with Margaret George's treatment of the subject - her research was exhaustive, and this certainly comes through with the level of detail in the text.
Not only that, George's writing style is exactly what you would imagine Cleopatra to feel, sound and be like. George really brings Cleopatra to life through the writing. By the time you get to the end and Cleopatra is dictating her final scroll, you've undergone this amazing journey with her through her life and you don't want it to end.
This book is definitely not to be missed... don't let the size of it intimidate you - you won't be disappointed!

This book is very long, like 950 pages long, but I had no trouble getting through it. It probably could have been shorter. The story of cleopatra's life was so interesting. I knew some, the Marc Antony part and her death, but I learned alot. Since it is historical fiction, the key events in history are true, but the rest is pure fiction.
