This was such a sweet, enjoyable light-hearted book, honoring the relationship and challenges between the living world and more-than-human realms, with lovable characters you can laugh with. The story unfolded slowly for the most part and with this style of pacing, there's always the risk that the leisurely set-up might dislocate the story once things began picking up in the plotline. I thought the ending did feel rushed compared to the rest of the book, but it was a satisfying conclusion. A relaxing, fun, and thoughtful read overall.

It seems like I might be one of the few that has read this book first before Elatsoe. I loved all the characters and the non-binary and asexual representation. While I agree with some of the other reviews that there are lingering questions left, I wonder if that’s on purpose. Based on the titles of the chapters and the pacing of the story, I feel like the author is intentionally imitating linguistic storytelling style and putting it into writing. Will I be pleased if there’s a sequel? Absolutely! But do I also think it’s good enough on its own? Definitely.

A wonderful young YA / upper middle grade novel that can be enjoyed by all age groups! While I was reading I thought about how well you could even retell parts of the story to young children as bedtime stories. It's refreshing and healing to read about teenagers who are as adventurous as they are careful, and whose family joins in on the adventure without asking questions or taking over the lead. If you're looking for a story about friendship, daring, myths, the environment and discovering family history, all in a very natural and accessible way, look no further!
