This book is a primer for kids on what to look for in third person fantasy adventure/RPG video games, and is rife with references to Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, and more that I probably missed! This would be equally fun for a fantasy-minded child and a geeky adult!

Colourful and amusing, but it's really hard to shake the feeling that you're reading an off-brand Adventure Time story. If Adventure Time didn't exist or I was oblivious to its existence, I probably would have enjoyed this a lot more.

This book has a very clever concept, and fantasy fans will enjoy the many pop culture allusions. However, I found the storyline unnecessarily chaotic, and there are so many speech bubbles that it's hard to keep up with everything that's happening. If someone is reading this aloud to a child, they will probably want to read through it a few times in advance, practicing the order of the constant, frenetic side commentary or deciding which parts to leave out.

I wouldn't recommend this for a group storytime, since there are so many tiny details in the illustrations that are key to enjoying the book, but some parents and kids will enjoy poring over the images and recognizing different references. This is probably best for elementary-aged kids, and not the typical preschooler, however. There are some mild scary elements, and much of the meta humor depends on existing familiarity with the fantasy genre.

A playful and very re-readable adventure book! We discovered this one two years ago and my son has revisited this book many many times ever since. Now my daughter (age 3) is equally enthusiastic about it and its recently-released followup. The book is very detailed and we still find new surprises hidden throughout the story to this day. A great book for all epic-adventure-oriented kids.

Very cute and a little tongue-in-cheek. This was more of an adventure than I thought I was in for!

If I had kids, this is totally what I'd be reading to them.

An utterly silly epic adventure that takes place in picture book/graphic novel format. My favorite character: the mushroom, who laments he has no hands, and frets that he can't feel his feet.
