Knowing the story of the hunger games I have always wondered what made Snow so evil and after reading this book I was blown away with his story. I was worried that the author was going to take the approach of making you feel bad for the villain, but instead she does the opposite. You don’t feel bad for Snow, he makes his choices all on his own and you do not feel any sympathy towards him and that is what makes it so good. You see how the evil is made and it is written so well. Lucy Gray is a beautifully written character and it is so sad she has to be apart of Snows rise to evil.

This was a reread for me because of the movie that just came out. I absolutely loved this book and enjoyed reading the entire thing. It is so fascinating to see Panem before the Hunger Games trilogy and see glimpses at both the world before and the trajectory set in motion because of Snow’s involvement in the games. The last 50 or so pages took quite the turn, and while I like the ambiguous ending, I feel like Snow and Lucy Gray’s feelings took a really quick nosedive that wasn’t quite as developed. I wish Lucy Gray had a little bit more depth, and I think that depth would have helped me understand her choices at the very end a little better since it seemed like Corio’s perception of her was distorted in the woods. Overall, this books makes me want so much more in this world!!

I can't praise this book enough. Suzanne Collins has such a special way of writing that manages to always keep me engaged and wanting to know more. I didn't even mind the slower parts the way I do in other books because they added so much to the story. Every sentence felt perfectly crafted to contribute to the themes of the story. I honestly already want to read it again and again.

Corionalus? Coriolanus when I CATCH YOU CORIOLANUS????

Suzanne Collins is a marvel and I loved how she added to the already amazing world building of the Hunger Games in this story. I know this isn't possible, but at this point I'd read a book about each game if she's the one writing it. I think my biggest takeaway is that feels rare to read a YA series that respects its readers in the way that this series does; I love that it doesn't feel as though your hand is ever being held for too long.

Also Lucy Gray I will think of you for the rest of my living days <3

Not as good as Catching Fire, by any means, or any of the original trilogy for that matter, but either way, I'm glad I decided to read it. It was an interesting, kind of painful, watching this kid who is confused and conflicted turn into a monster.
