A very moving novel with great characters. I loved all the different points of view, always changing it up and following a different character just as you start to feel you know someone. I'm a very white person with whiteness stretching back in my blood forever, so it was very interesting to read about Stella and Desiree and their separate lives, and think about the ripple effect and impact on so many because of their parting - Bennett does such a great job at making it all feel so believable. I appreciated the scope of the book across so much time but still feeling so intimate.

This book is a masterpiece! Captivating from page one, this is a beautiful story about identity, race, and reinvention. Easily one of my favorite reads this year.

I fell in love with Jude Winston. I wasn’t too sure at the beginning how I was liking the book, but as soon as Jude came into the picture I devoured this book. Not what I expected at all, it was better. It read almost like a novelized version of a play. Brilliantly written.
