3.5…okay here’s the the thing: the writing is beautiful the concept is exquisite and potentially this rating is a consequence of the reading slump i’m in, but you have to be invested in this book from the beginning if you want to love it, and i was not. it has all the elements of a brilliant story, and is undoubtedly well written, but i was just very indifferent about it all. maybe one day i’ll reread and think more highly of it

I finished this in one sitting at the library and biked home feeling almost physically disoriented. The characters almost yanked me along with them in their crooked paths, and on top of that the way that the point of view and setting changes between (as well as within) chapters really threw me with no warning into the strange, unnatural world of this book. Overall, I'm glad that this caught my eye, but the story a bit too extreme for me to buy my own copy.

I couldn’t finish this book because it reads like an NYU creative writing assignment. The characters are well developed but unrealistic, and the language comes across to me as sappy and forced.
