These are always a good read. Two girls are found buried, brings up a cold case from Lucas's early years. He made a big mistake. Now it's time to rectify that mistake.

I started reading this book a while back and realized when he started talking about Lucas' background that I remembered very little of the early books. The novel then jumped to a flashback of Lucas as a rookie and I just couldn't get into it, thinking that I should be understanding more than I did about the people he was meeting and working with. So, I started re-reading the series at the beginning. I am glad I did. I really enjoy his writing and found myself understanding more about the relationships and how one thing led to another throughout the series.
That said, this is one of the best books in the series. I loved learning about the young Davenport and seeing how choices he made as a rookie affected the way he went about his work in his future career.
Sandford was one of my favorite authors from the moment I read his first book over 20 years ago and I am glad I took the time to relive why.

.25 for Marcy
Well, I thought the premise was great. Enjoyed travelling back in time, although meeting Randy at that time conflicts with Randy's age when we first met him.
And, of course, the screwup with amnesiac Marcy, who has forgotten her marriage, her son, and that she no longer has the hots for Lucas.
Sandford posted on Facebook that he killed Marcy because the plot needed momentum. That's a crappy thing to do to Marcy, who seemed happiest of all the cops (well, except for her amnesia).
I perfectly understand his friends' concerns that Lucas will do something grossly illegal, thereby ending his own career and damaging those of everyone else. Let's face it--Lucas has manipulated situations and carried on extralegal actions through the entire series.
I really dislike Letty. She's the little devil that sits on both of Lucas's shoulders, encouraging him to indulge his worst intentions. I'm surprised Weather allows that. What might be acceptable in a cynical, experienced cop is unacceptable in a bratty, indulged high school kid who now has the advantages of wealthy, connected parents. Some maturation on her part would not be remiss.

I listened to this one on CD. I found myself looking for a longer drive so I could listen to more! Great book!!

Vintage John Sandford...taut thriller/mystery in his Prey series. The first half of this one takes us back to Davenport's early days as a patrol officer when he first gets bumped to plainclothes detective status to help search for two young girls who were kidnapped. The second half moves us back to the present day to finish up with that now cold case. Lots of action, lots of violence...not for the squeamish. There were a number of parts that I skimmed over, but I enjoyed the police procedural parts.
Sandford (pseudonym for John Roswell Camp) is a former Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, a good writer, who may know something about actual police procedure. I'm sure his books are extremely exaggerated in their action and violence and so forth, Yet, I wonder if there isn't a bit of truth buried therein about how police work happens. Meh…probably very little resemblance to the real thing.

Great story, fast paced. Started the Lucas Davenport series with this one and still felt like I got to know the character.
