On the whole, I would recommend this book. I enjoyed this book until about halfway through when it started to get a bit tedious. The style was very poetic and the words he chooses are very rich and full of meaning - but he does get a bit carried away at points making the book longer than strictly necessary. I also really enjoyed the fact that he told his story (often) through the stories of others making the memoir take on varied viewpoints. I did think that at some point, he started to make some very sweeping statements that began to grate on my nerves and this is what made the book tedious. It always infuriates me when people make broad statements about the world when they haven't experienced the whole world.

En tiedä antaako tälle kolme vai viisi tähteä. Pablo Nerudan elämä oli täynnä toinen toistaan jännittävämpiä tapahtumia, joista me luemme koulun penkillä (erilaiset sodat ja selkkaukset), ja henkilöitä, joiden nimet ovat tuttuja: Picasso, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Gabriela Mistral, Federico Lorca, Diego Rivera, Salvador Allende, Mao Tse-Tung. Kiinnostavinta kirjassa oli noin ensimmäinen puolisko kirjasta, jossa Neruda kertoo nuoruudestaan ja elämästään 50-luvulle asti. Sitten seuraa pitkä osio, joissa Neruda kertoo - yleensä ylistäen - yksi kerrallaan toisista runoilijoista ja taitelijoista, jotka hän tunti henkilökohtaisesti. Ja niitä on kymmeniä. Loppua kohti muistelmat taas saavat vauhtia ja muuttuvat enemmän tarinaluontoiseksi.
Juuri kirjan rakenteen takia antaisin kolme tähteä. Toisaalta tämä ei olekaan romaani, vaan muistelmat, ja vielä sellainen jota Neruda ei itse kerennyt kunnolla viimeistelemään yllättävän kuolemansa vuoksi. Viisi tähteä kirja ansaitsee ainakin kolmesta syystä: ensiksi, hyvin erilainen näkökulma moneen maailmanhistorian tapahtumaan. Toiseksi, tämä on loputon anekdootti- ja kaskukokoelma kymmenistä ja kymmenistä kuuluisista ihmisistä. Kolmanneksi, Nerudan runoilijankieli on vahvasti läsnä myös näissä muistelmissa. Ehkä vaakakuppi kallistuu nyt kuitenkin sinne viiteen tähteen.

Neruda obviously has an incredible way with words. In a memoir those came in fits and starts. But reading for me came to a screeching halt 1/3 of the way through the book when he writes, in one short paragraph, of raping a woman. He closed out the 9-sentence paragraph with, "the experience was never repeated."
