I can acknowledge how something (especially humour) is of its time and still say with confidence Don Quixote is a very cruel book. The point is to find the misfortunes and attacks Don Quixote and Sancho Panza undergo (sometimes through their own fault, sometimes for being weird where other people can see them) as funny and honestly?, 900-odd pages of that starts to drag

What I enjoyed about this book was the metatextual quality to it. oooooo I'm a postmodern author with my intertextuality and fourth wall breaking ooooo It Is Quite Literally The Oldest Trick In The Book
I don't know how intentionally funny these parts were but I thought they were great - every so often Cervantes either as himself or through a narrator would turn to the audience and proclaim this next bit was going to be good, or that it sounds fake but did really happen, or take a chapter to complain about another author who wrote a knockoff sequel to the first part of his book

Thank the lord for audiobooks. That's all I can say.

Well, I can say more, and I will, but still, this was ridiculously long and boring in most parts. The overall tone of the book was perfectly humorous, but it just dragged on forever. I found it interesting how everything about Don Quixote that lasts in popular culture is the adventure of the windmills when it only lasted about a page or so. It was so insignificant that I was actually surprised and wondered how it stood out among so many other hilarious misadventures.

It was a good book, and it's easy to see why it's a classic that has stood the test of time. I couldn't give it more than three stars though because it was just so long and just so boring. It was too imaginative and fantastic to dislike in anyway though.
