dark emotional informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

A friend wanted to lend me this book after I’d described an afternoon being productive but feeling little satisfaction in the things that usually help me realign myself. I read this slowly, in fits and starts. It is written lyrically with helpful and thoughtful truths mixed with science mixed with narrative. The narrative aspect wasn’t always clear as far as timeline, but that made sense in the context of what this book is and has to offer. A helpful read I’ll want to return to.

Wilson has lived with anxiety for decades, and she's cycled through several therapists and diagnoses. She's a voracious reader and a prolific writer. She's eternally curious, and she's constantly seeking.

Basically, she and I are twins. (But she got this book done and is collecting the royalties.)

Fans: If you want to journey through my anxious brain, read Wilson's book. She has explored various religions, read a lot of psychology, looked at neuroscience, done progressive relaxation, gone on yoga retreats, taken baths, taken a peek at evolutionary psychology, examined the mind-body connection through nutrition, exercise, and Buddhism.

I've done all that, too.

I'm not dismissing her book. I'm recommending it. Just fasten your seat belt, because the style is frenetic an the genres are varied and mashed up.

Which is how I would write about anxiety, too.

It's a little freaky to see myself in a mirror, but it's also comforting, and it's also making me see myself as someone who could write a book but didn't get around to it.

But it's also fabulous that I can tell friends and family: READ THIS BOOK! Whether you have anxiety or know someone who has anxiety. It's instructive, interesting, and often lyric.

DID NOT FINISH

too scattered, very difficult to follow

Had to put it away for now, because of my own anxiety..

DID NOT FINISH: 9%

Not my cup of tea, although I’m loosely interested in the concepts I don’t normally vibe with the memoir format.

3.5 rounded up. Some good stuff some stuff that I’m like, nope that’s not correct. But ultimately it has all the right good intentions and can be helpful.
hopeful reflective slow-paced

The writing jumped around in an incoherent way without offering real-world ways to cope with anxiety. Too much woo was presented and not enough evidence-based studies.

I think this is a “take what you need” kind of book: anxiety edition. Not everything rang true for me, but there’s also plenty that has stuck in my brain and I’m sure I’ll continue to reflect on. At some point, I think I want to read it again with a highlighter and a notebook.
