Recently rewatched the movie and rededicated myself to finally reading the novel so that I could continue the series in book form. I need more Easy and Mouse and Odell in my life.

Because I'm so familiar with the film, there weren't many surprises in the novel, so that affected my enjoyment some. But there are differences that - along with Mosley's style - kept me engaged.

One specific disappointment though is that one of my biggest questions about the film remained unanswered. There's a character in the movie - a man in Easy's neighborhood - who is obsessed with cutting down trees. There's no explanation for his obsession in the film, so I hoped for some insight from the book, but the character isn't even there. Maybe he appears in later novels. Another reason for me to keep reading.

A classic noir mystery set in L.A. that just takes your breath away, like the novel's femme fatale. Straight forward while plumbing the depths of humanity. Storytelling at its greatest.

I've been wanting to read this for a long time and checked out the audio book from the library. It definitely kept me on my toes. I loved Easy's character. I saw this movie a million years ago so every time I pictured Easy I saw Denzel Washington. *swoon* I felt like I missed a few things since I was listening to this at work and would stop and start a lot but it was a good suspenseful story and that Mr. Albright was just horrible. Sadly some of the things Easy went through with all that racism still goes on today. Daphne was a piece of work. I liked when Easy would flash back to his time in the war and how he was treated and what he saw. I'll definitely keep reading more in the Easy Rawlings series.

i think that men can write women but also its fucking depressing when you read what some men will write about women.
