The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution by Dan Hicks

Wow. The insufficient word I kept thinking as I read this book. So many things I had never considered about artifacts in museums- how they got there, why they were there. How the items reflect colonization. The return of looted items to Benin-why it’s important. Such a thought provoking book.
It is a dense read, but I think it’s worth it.

Unfortunately only interesting towards the end. The chapters and chapters examining the military mechanics of colonial brutality were too long for what I thought was going to be a book more about museum & museum management’s place in colonisation. Important book but wish it was reworked a bit.

Will need to get back to this book at a later date, or maybe try the audiobook. The subject matter is so important!

Completely dry writing, I found it hard to pay attention. Interesting subject matter which I would not have considered.
