Going into this 260 page book I thought this will be a quick read. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Tori Spring, who is Charlie Spring’s older sister is a depressed teenager. She is self loathing, and many time’s self destructive with thoughts of self harm. She becomes obsessed with the mystery of Solitaire, a mysterious person/persons terrorizing the school. As Tori’s friend, Michael points out, though all the the “pranks” relate back to her. Tori is fumbling through her life, not sleeping, worrying about solitaire and messing up her relationships with friends and the one boy, Michael who seems genuinely to care about her. This is the ultimate angst filled ya novel, written at the time by an actual teenager. Alice Oseman definitely knew what she was doing though and the characters  come across real and sympathetic.

I came to this from Heartstopper, and it's different to the beautiful, heart warming loveliness of that bubble. Slightly darker, though I understand the re-release was edited to remove some even darker aspects.
I didn't connect with Tori. I was hoping she'd be a strong female lead, but she seemed oblivious to what was going on around her until it was pointed out by other (male) characters. Yes, she "doesn't care", but she's also written as very clever, so how did she miss these things?
I still enjoyed it, and read it very quickly. I think I more enjoyed it as getting some other back ground to what's happening in Heartstopper.

I really enjoyed other Alice Oseman books so I dove into this one expecting the same thing. Unfortunately I didn't click with this one the same way I have with others. I struggled to connect fully with Tori, even though I like her character in other books. It kinda just felt like she was existing in different places for the whole book and never fully engaged with the plot herself. I also unfortunately found Michael quite awkward and irritating. Something about the way he barged in to the meal just felt quite icky to me and I think that overshadowed his other appearances.

Characters: 6/10
Atmosphere: 7/10
Writing: 4/10
Plot: 5/10
Intrigue: 4/10
Logic: 6/10
Enjoyment: 5/10
