I tried to like this book. I really did. But it just didn’t capture my attention enough. Usually an almost 400 page book would not take me a month to read. I just didn’t find myself interested in what happened next in the story. The questions left to answer are not enough for me to go out and grab the next book in the series. But I really wanted to like it more than I do.

I think, like everyone else it seems, that you either love it or you don’t. I just kinda...don’t.

Interesting world that seems old but is really far future Earth. Mysterious magic that isn't fully explained yet. Powerful teenaged Queen but refreshingly not beautiful and good at everything. Lots of gruff soldiers with hearts of gold. Super evil bad guys and girls. Mysterious dashing bad guy or is he a good guy?

Not perfect but I'm in for book 2.

DID NOT FINISH

I mainly checked this out because I saw that Eva Chen was reading Book3 on her Instastory, and how Emma Watson liked the story so much that she's supposedly producing the movie adaptation. The premise seemed interesting enough.

OH HOW WRONG I WAS.
*disclaimer* I didn't finish the book.

From what I've read, it's so incredibly boring and inconsistent. The protagonist, Kelsea, was raised in a cabin in the woods by two older people, who supposedly made a promise with the child's mother that they would protect and prepare the girl to someday ascend the throne. Then, they go on to do nothing of the sort. Kelsea is educated by her protectors, and is taught the importance of knowing history so that she doesn't repeat the same mistakes, AND YET she is forbidden to know of her mother, the former Queen, and the circumstances surrounding her death. She is told that she needs to be smart once she gets to the Court, so that she can survive, but supposedly knows nothing about anything, so not sure how that's gonna work out.

When the guards come to collect her, they are described as old and ugly in one paragraph, and then suddenly the page turns and they're all handsome and she can't stop checking them out. W.T.F. Decide on one, and stick with it!!! The guards themselves are also just ridiculous. Most of them supposedly served with her mother and are the best fighters in the kingdom, and yet they seem to have no sense of professionalism or respect for their charge, aka the young Queen. Much of their interaction with Kelsea is just inappropriate and unprofessional. They're also not super great at being guards. They know that they're being tracked, and are trying to avoid giving away their location, yet at night, decide to casually pitch a tent, set up a blazing fire AND get drunk??? I was only a Girl Scout for a year, and I know that's not how camping is supposed to go--ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE TRYING TO AVOID CAPTURE/DEATH. How incompetent can you get?

I didn't get that far into the book and I feel somewhat bad for quitting, but I just can't anymore with this book. How is this over 400 pages?

Also, I had to read a few other reviews to realize that this is not set in an alternate universe, or in the past, BUT IN THE FUTURE. WHAT. They're living like it's the Dark Ages, but somehow, I'm supposed to believe that it's 300 years in the future??? The only thing that somehow survived the apocalypse and downfall of humans is Medieval technology??? OKAY. THAT MAKES SENSE. THIS BOOK MAKES SO MUCH SENSE.

4.5\5. This is an easy fantasy read with some refreshing twists on old tropes of the genre. Some good and confusing soft world building which I enjoy but have trouble reconciling in mind. Finished the first of 3, and instantly ordered the remaining two in the series.

Wow. I did not expect that I will be in love with this series. And the audiobook is so engaging and the acting is superb! I love the intense parts. Hoping for more in the next books.

I thought this book was YA and when it turned out it wasn't, I loved it even more. But, be aware, it starts off sounding like something Graceling-esque and quickly/suddenly turns into Adult Material. So don't be lulled into YA land. Some people seem to not like it because of this, but I actually appreciated the fact that it wasn't YA and decided to deal with a more graphic/grown up depiction of war. Though, Twigger Warnings Abound.

It's the first of a trilogy - which I didn't know when I grabbed it, but I'm excited about Book 2 now. It's totally worth reading and waiting for the rest (though my opinion may change between Book 2 & 3). I bought this for Kindle on sale and definitely would have paid more for the experience.

Reminded me of Dune - if Dune was about a 19 year old Queen in a fantasy/medieval-esque setting instead of a Sci-Fi epic about a coming-of-age boy/man.

I could have done without it being set in a fantasy future where the current world as we know it has passed away and left The Tearling as we now find it. It could have just been a straight fantasy world. So, you know, I ignored all mentions of Europe/America as it suited me. The mention of things like "The Hobbit" was jarring and unnecessary and it would have been a better book for not trying to be Future Fantasy.

Not a perfect book, but I read it in one day and almost want to read it again Right Away.

Though, to be fair, it was what I wanted when I wanted it. On re-read, I might find the whole thing worse off. But, for now, a solid 4 stars.

I have to say I started reading this book in a little bit of book slump also I lowkey thought this book was a little too hyped up not to talk about it being described to me as slow.
And I mean there were some slow passages but this book is what I have been looking for for ever! 😍
I just feel so attached to Kelsea and I can't help but want to see her next adventures and although I find it a little too much violent I loved everything in it, and hope to read the sequel soon! 😊
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A BOOK YOU NEED TO READ! 😍😍😍
