I'm speechless. This is a beautiful work, an amazing start to a trilogy and I already ordered the remaining books in this series!
This is definitely a slow-burn, it is not packed with action every single page, but I find that so amazing and allowed me to focus on the characters and understand their wits and actions more deeply, because I wasn't thrown in an action, strange battle all the damn time.
One of my new favorites, for sure!

There are tons of cliché here and some scene are totally cringeworthy, but I still liked it. I'll read the sequel for sure.

This was a very enjoyable and well-written fantasy novel. Good characters. Plot that hummed along. She's doing some interesting things with gender and slavery. Nice fun.
Fun and fast-paced, I sped through this in a day.
Our main character has more than a touch of 'not like other girls' syndrome, but that's to be expected from 2014 fantasy.

I honestly don’t know why I struggled with this read so much. It feels like something I should love, but I had a difficult time connecting with the story.
Pros: I found many of the characters very likable (ily Mace) and the worldbuilding was really cool. I loved the casual references to this futuristic society after the fall of technology and wish we’d gotten more of the lore surrounding this place and the people who came to live there.
Cons: The entire story feels like set up for something later in the series, but lacking enough pay off to make me actually care to pick up the later books. Lots of character development, but very little plot. Also, tw for several mentions of child abuse (physical and sexual) that served no purpose outside of demonstrating that someone/something was bad, which feels like lazy storytelling and is a huge pet peeve of mine.
Also worth noting that the audio version was fantastic! The very enthusiastic narration was the only thing keeping me engaged much of the time.
