So yeah this book was pretty good. It's weird, Johansen's way of writing grabs the reader and is brimmed with detail and nuance, yet not much actually happens in the book. I'd say about 60% of it is just thinking, describing and talking as opposed to action, world building, etc. Normally this would bug me but I enjoyed Johansen's style so much it didn't really bother me. That being said it made this book feel a tad of a drag at times, especially with its horrendously long chapters, that nothing can happen for like 70 pages. But this is an interesting world with and setting, and a good read overall.
This book is a variation on the “hidden princess taking back her kingdom” story. One thing I really enjoyed about this book was how real and believable the heroine felt. She made mistakes, struggled with inner conflicts, and sometimes chose poorly, but those choices were completely believable to me. I think she’s a very strongly realized character. One thing I’ve seen criticized in this book is that the world and how it got to this point is not explained, but that didn’t really bother me because I feel all will be revealed over the course of the trilogy and I find the mystery compelling.
Great book! Lots of political intrigue. At first I thought Kelsey was a character that was tossed into a situation that she was unprepared for, but I admit I underestimated her. She has the perfect personality for a queen; able to read people, concerned for the lowly, but smart and shrewd enough to make and carry out tough decisions. Her banter with Mace had me chuckling many times. The History of the Tearling was a surprise, I wasn't expecting that, and it almost makes me consider it in another genre (I won't tell what, it would ruin the surprise). I like books that are real, that don't leave out the grit of what would truly be in times like those, and this book didn't disappoint. Kelsey faced issues that had no simple right or wrong answer and often the best answer would end up causing more blood shed. I loved all of the character and look forward to the next one!
THIS IS NOT A YA BOOK!! While the book and characters were interesting. This is not a book for young teens!!!
