This is absolutely not for everyone but if you’re into taboo, dark romance, and murder kinks, this will satisfy an itch you didn’t know need scratching. The writing was elevated compared to the first book, but still fan fiction-esque giving ao3 roots vibes. This story is wild from beginning to end and the characters, though horrible disgusting human beings, really pull at your heart strings.

H. D. Carlton has done it again. This book had me in such a choke hold and I just could not put it down. This is hands down the darkest, yet spiciest book I have ever read, emphasis on dark. I highly recommend reading reviews and really taking into consideration the warnings the author provide for this book because it is VERY dark and covers extremely sensitive topics. Don’t just read this book because you saw it on TicTok, it is not for everyone and that’s okay. <Spoilers Ahead>Read this book because you love the cat and mouse and how Addies love grows for Z, yet Z’s unrelenting, obsessed love has been there from the very beginning. Read this book because you have an open mind and are okay reading hard things that make you reflect on this dark world. Read this book because it will make you feel things you haven’t felt in a long time. Weakness, hopefulness, pride, anguish, heart break, lust, love, excitement, toe curling joy, anger, resentment. Read this book for a happy ending that you never thought possible when you first started reading this series. And please read Satan’s Affair! I read it before the reading the first book but to be honest you can read it before the second book as well. I love Sibby and Satan’s Affair offers a deeper look into her life which was interesting to say the least! Overall amazing writing and such a captivating story! There were some parts I wish were different (such as the ending of Claire, Rocco, Xavier, and Francesca, I thought their deaths would be more drawn out and filled with torture) but I love that this book kept you on your toes, fills the story line with an amazing plot, gives you characters you form a trauma bond with, and includes so, so much spice. 🌶️🥰

Whew. Check Trigger Warnings. So...I don't even know what to say. At 50% and about 75% I genuinely didn't know what else could happen. Woe is me. And the characters because we all got clotheslined. I managed to get through the really intense beginning all the way to the end. I'm glad I did and at the same time I'll be content to never re-read these books. Not saying that as a bad thing, just a "I've experienced it and can check it off the list" way.

Had me in the first half ngl

After the 60% mark it just gets unhinged, story stops existing and it’s just pure sex - which is fine, but bro I was enjoying the story so much

Spice is spicier than a ghost chilli, story was great until it wasn’t, pretty decent easy to binge book

This is quite possibly the darkest dark romance I’ve ever read. If you’re hoping for a quick reunion, this one ain’t for you! HD Carlson does warn readers that this book is significantly darker than the first book in the duet, and she wasn’t lying. I had to pace myself and take breaks by reading a book or two between the first and second half. Going into part II, I knew there was going to be some significant character development, and I was here for it.

Now I’m off to read Satan’s Affair because I didn’t read the prequel and I think it will answer some questions that I have about Sibby.

I finished reading Hunting Adeline almost 24 hours ago and I am still processing what kind of impact this book had on me. I’m not even sure I can write a proper review because this had so many passages, so many quotes and phrases that I’d love to highlight yet don’t want to share. Does that make sense? I’m starting to think while the first book of the duet focused on pushing or finding the own limits in terms of morality, this was different. It touched me on a deeply personal level and one I’m not comfortable to share with the general public on the internet.
First of all, I have never read a book that needed its TW more than this did. If any of those make you feel slightly uncomfortable or unsure if you can read and stomach it, just put the book back down. There is absolutely no shame in it, you don’t have to go darker with every read if it means it affects your mental health. For anyone doubting that a book has the might to do that, this book does. I have read some dark and gore-y stuff and yet this took everything to a new level. Also, if at any point in this book you want to stop and DNF, just do it. It does not make you weak in any way.
Why do I feel the need to highlight this? Because I didn’t sleep. Hunting Adeline’s first part affected me so badly, that I could not settle down, I was utterly restless, and I felt physical pain while reading. Permanent unease, this wicked gut feeling of “this is not right” and jitters? All of these happened to me while struggling with the first part. I wanted company, I didn’t want to suffer alone and yet I did because it felt right and connecting to what Addie went through, even if on a whole different level. Just thinking back to those chapters, my heart rate noticeably increases, and I feel some kind of unease spreading.
This was hard to read. I won’t go into even more detail, but I suffered alongside Addie and the only thing I kept clutching like a lifeline was Zade’s sarcasm and extra dry humour, that’s just superior. We experience an incredibly strong female lead, alongside a caring and patient, yet true to himself, male main character, who just fit together so well.
I was told this book might drag at parts a bit, but it didn’t feel like it for me, especially after having managed the first part of the book. The healing journey and Addie recuperating, finding new strength and honing her abilities needed as many pages as they filled, period. Nothing annoys me more than a rushed recovery-process just to be back to normal just two shades darker, which is why I truly enjoyed the time H.D. Carlton gave Addie and Zade. Adding some side characters was a nice touch, too, though I missed the company of the ones of book 1 as they seemed more absent and also previously went through traumatic experiences – I probably just wish to have seen more of them.
As I don’t feel comfortable sharing most of the lines that touched and affected me most, I’ll try to end the review here. Compared to the first book, which may have been a darker shade of grey, this was pitch-black, and I urge you to take the TWs seriously and to listen to your feelings, if you feel the need to DNF. I, too, searched for “how long do I have to suffer until” answers (and found none, thank you, internet) to hold on, so if you feel the need to ask someone “how much longer” or “I want to skip this, can you tell me when/in which chapter to continue”, feel free to reach out and I’ll provide you with spoiler-free answers.
In terms of a conclusion: This book made me suffer, a lot, it also helped to heal and to come out stronger than I (and Addie) was before. It lacked a teenie-tiny bit to be perfect for me and I would have wished to see more of Jay and Daya, as well as a few other, minor plot points, which results in a very, very impressive rating of 4.5 to me. This was not a comfortable read, but it was one I needed, and I am glad I pushed through. It is also one I probably will remember for a long time.
