"Where's the fun in anything if there's no risk?"
First of all, Jennifer L. Armentrout- You rock!! THANK YOU for posting this creeptastic freebie for your fans! This book was so freaking mind-blowing. It normally takes me quite some time to get involved in a story and get used to the characters, but this book had me hooked from the word Jensen go. The way JLA dealt out a perfect blend of romance and suspense in the most compelling way is truly worth lauding.
Ella, Penn, Gavin and Jensen are inseparable childhood best friends who fall apart when Penn unexpectedly dies. Jensen moves away and even though Gavin and Ella are still close, nothing is the way it used to be. Ella is now in her senior year at high school and is determined to take the maximum fun out of it along with her best friend Lindsey.
Things start turning out to be not-so-awesome when she gets attacked on her way back after a party by someone in a clown mask. As much as Ella tries to move on from this incident, her tormentor is adamant on making her life a living hell. In comes Jensen- and HOLY HOT TAMALE!!!
"My body locked up at the sound of his voice, and my gaze started at the tan hiking boots and traveled up denim clad thighs, over an old screen t-shirt that clung to abs and then a broad chest and shoulders. I forced my eyes all the way up, and they met pale blue ones. Jensen."
He certainly stole the show. While it certainly doesn't help that Ella fell for Jensen years ago and he broke her heart, it is with Jensen's help that she finds herself being able carry on her normal life in spite of the attacker's increasingly horrifying and frequent attacks.
As much as Ella wants to put her past behind her, she can't shake off the feeling that it all somehow connects to it- to Penn. What is the motive behind the attacker's actions? Does it all link up to her past or doesn't it? What happened to Penn four years ago- and what caused Jensen to move away? All these questions came up with great rapidity, making me desperate to know the truth behind it all.
The author did a great job with the character-building. Ella was a strong character even in the face of all that horror in her life. I found myself being able to connect with her, and she was likable enough. Jensen was truly amazing (Can I have him for my birthday already?). Not too perfect, oozing sexiness and so charming, he was always there for Ella. The chemistry between them was excellent and they certainly lived up to my expectations as a couple. I loved how Jensen was so protective of Ella, but she saved herself most of the time anyway.
"I want to be that guy-the one that when your phone rings you hope it's me. The one who holds your hand in the hallway and at lunch, and the guy who gets to hold you. I want to be yours."
*Sigh* All other characters were given enough space and importance. Penn was portrayed exceptionally well and my heart broke for him. His was such a realistic character and sure to leave an impact on the reader. Gavin, Linds and Heidi were important characters and each satisfied me in their own way.
The book always kept me guessing about what was next to come and who was behind the mask. I'd have bet my money on one of the characters when something would happen to put another in the spotlight. Everyone was a suspect and it frustrated me to no ends when I was proven wrong from time to time. Towards the end though I began to speculate on one particular character and it did turn out to be right- but even that had an unexpected twist in it that I never saw coming.
Overall this book was a terrific thriller filled with mystery and suspense at every turn. The ending was extremely satisfying and my only woe is that this book is a stand-alone. I'd definitely love to read more about Jensen and Ella!
Favorite Quotes:
Considering that you're not Nancy Drew, and I'm not one of the Hardy Boys, I'm not sure exactly what we can do.
Everyone talks about women needing 'girl power,' as if that's something we're just born with. I mean, really, what is girl power? A pill or a drink we can take? Having a ton of female friends? Playing sports? Knowing how to kick box coming out of the uterus? Being incredibly wise or a general smart-ass?
There are people who kill for the thrill of it- thrill killers. There's no rhyme or reason why.
I want to be everything.

The Dead List Review on K-Books
“You’re the first girl I’ve ever fallen in love with, Ella, and you’ll be the last girl I ever love.”
The Dead List has been on my radar for years. It was one of the very first books offered to the JLA ARC team back in 2017 when it first started. Back then I passed on it as it has my greatest fear in it… clowns. Fast forward three years and I finally plucked up the courage to read it. I am so glad that I finally gave it a chance and read this one. It was fast-paced and left you guessing right to the end.
The Dead List follows Ella, a high school student who finds herself as the victim of some hideous crimes. She is attacked when leaving a party and barely escapes. After her attack, more and more girls go missing and there’s creepy signs that the culprit is after Ella. Can Ella find who the killer is and can she do it before she becomes the next victim?
I’m a big fan of YA thrillers. I really enjoy them, but I’ll be honest, I’m a total baby and get creeped out really easily. There were a few times in The Dead List where I had to put the book down for a while to calm myself down a bit, mainly because there was a clown mask and as someone with coulrophobia I was slightly terrified. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be though and other than those specific scenes I thoroughly loved this book. It was amazing.
One of the things I love about thrillers is I love to guess ‘who dunnit’ and see if I’m right. Right from the start I guessed the culprit correctly. This didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book as it just made me more excited to find out if I was right. The Dead List is thrilling, exciting and heart-meltingly romantic. I loved the romance in this one, Ella and Jensen are 100% couple goals! I loved every moment of their romance and their relationship.
The Dead List is a fantastic YA thriller. If you love this genre, I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s perfectly creepy, the perfect read for Halloween (which is when I read it). I loved every moment of this highly romantic thriller. I probably won’t read it again, you know because… clowns. But I am so glad I finally read it.

Such a good book. I loved the relationship between Jensen and Ella.
Not for one moment I thought that Jensen was the killer. I just love Jensen.
What I did expect was Shaw and Gavin being the killer. I expected one to be the killer but by the end I guessed them both right!
What bugged me also was that Ella, who was described as a clumsy girl, could survive five attacks. And yes, after the first attack she took self-defence classes. But come on guys, five?! Really?
But still the ending was still great and thrilling, though.
It's around midnight now and I can't sleep because right now I'm too scared. So that being said I'm going to read a Kasie West book now to go in the lovey-dovey vibe so I can get some well-deserved rest.

I’ve been a fan of JLA for a long ass time, yet I still haven’t made my way through all of her work. So picking this up was exciting because now I get to knock another one off my list.
It was honestly pretty suspenseful but nothing too scary. Was it fucked up? Yes. Definitely. But nothing blew me away.
Oddly enough it reminded me of that Stephanie Perkins book, There’s Someone Inside Your House? I can’t remember the title which is annoying. That book received really crap reviews but I really enjoyed it?! Not that this deserves crap reviews (it doesn’t) but they just felt similar in their stories.
This is a good thriller/mystery but still has a cute romance to follow. I enjoyed it but I don’t think I’ll be picking it up for a reread.

Einfach wieder toll! Bin nur so durchgeflogen 🙂
I liked it. I felt disappointed by how predictable it was, but yeah, not totally bad.
Thrilling, stunning and exciting! This book is brilliant! Of course, there is some romance and friendship. There's enough of it. But the tension and shock are the most important and geatest things about this book. Every time you thing you're in safety something happens and everything - every calmness - is gome within a second!
I did NOT expect this book to end the way it did, but despite how shocked I was, I really liked it. First of all, there are enough clues throughout the story for everything to make sense in the end, but they are placed so perfectly that it's extremely difficult to guess who the killer (or killers!) are. I was on my toes for the entire novel because I had no idea who to trust! I especially liked how Ella's past is twisted into the mystery with flashbacks and tragic memories- and how what she thinks happened isn't what really did. The romance between Ella and Jensen was sweet, and it didn't overpower the story either- another element of the story the author has nailed. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's looking into reading it! I myself read this novel while stuck in quarantine and it is a GREAT way to pass the time!
