My daughter is 9 now and she LOVES to read on her own. But we also still do bed time reading. Since she likes to read herself before bed, we usually only do about 10 pages before bed of a book together. And some nights, she's just so into her book that she'd rather read that and we skip our book. So it took quite a while to get through this one, though not because of any flaw in the book, to be sure!

I think I, personally, liked this one even better than the first in the series. I'm not sure if I can pinpoint exactly why, but this one just seemed to be a little more fun for me to read. I see that the third one just came out also, so we'll have to pick that one up soon!

Both my kids and I LOVE this series!!!! It's going to be tough waiting these next several months for the third book to be available. (It's listed on Amazon for future publication.)

Though Darwen still doesn't feel like he belongs at the posh Hillside Academy, things are looking up now that he has made two best friends and Mr Peregrine has showed up as their new World Studies teacher. Unfortunately, a terrible monster has stolen a boy in Silbrica and even Mr Peregrine is not taking it seriously enough. Now they are off to Costa Rica to try and find the breach where he was taken from.
I loved the descriptions of all the amazing places through the portal. Jungles, a bamboo grove and a red desert with green ice. Also this book had even scarier monsters than the first, the Insidious Bleck sounds absolutely terrifying, though it isn't necessarily the worst thing from Silbrica. I was hoping for more of Moth but she didn't appear so fingers crossed for book 3. I think Alex is my favourite character at the moment, she always knows how to get the two boys back on track. the book was a little bit too long for me but still a fun and thrilling adventure.
