3.5 AVERAGE

*Sigh*

While I'll admit to Mark Twain's brilliance, I was still very displeased with the ending although I knew it was going to happen.

This book was unfortunately less overwhelming than when I first read it 29 years ago. Especially the chapters involving Tom Sawyer felt childish and out-of-place. The first four chapters are in the same vein as '[b:The Adventures of Tom Sawyer|24583|The Adventures of Tom Sawyer|Mark Twain|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1404811979l/24583._SY75_.jpg|41326609]', but when Huckleberry's Finn turns up, the novel enters darker waters. Nevertheless, the book remains a rather episodic adventure novel, with little development. Moreover, the use of dialect and the frequent use of the n-word get on one's nerves. What remains is Twain's great ode to the Mississippi river, who's arguably the real star of the book.

Adventure of Huckleberry Finn is the quintessential work in American dialect of its time and place.

I reread this while reading James. Honestly, felt like James could have addressed more sections of this book than it did. Def a product of its time and certainly makes you think.

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

With the over-saturation of America, I end up reading too many American classics... Hmm, next year's goal is to not.

Insane how I read this in 4th grade without any prior context and enjoyed it then but now looking back to this book...I should've been more serious reading it as it actually dwells into a lot of serious social topics??? Some of which that are still relevant in this day and age??? But yeah...don't have a lot to say it's a decent book but as a fully grown and mature adult I don't see the point of reading through it again and again.

Note to my past self: you should've done a better job at understanding this book you would've saved yourself a lot of time while adjusting your moral compass rather than just fiddle around with a hot wheels set.

Reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in my forties is definitely an adventure! I could really appreciate the innocence in a young boy’s way of thinking, but also the masterful way Mark Twain uses that voice to pass messages and opinions on heavy, serious issues in the southern states during the early 19th century. Did I get pissed while reading? Oh yes, more than once. But I also appreciated the vivid depiction of pre–Civil War American society, with all its problems and its supposed “charm.” This is a coming-of-age story that deals with racism and slavery, freedom, friendship, family, and society’s hypocrisy, along with human nature in general. Twain blends drama and satire in a brilliant way that only he could do. It’s considered one of the great American novels, sometimes controversial for its language and themes, but still powerful in its honesty. A light, enjoyable read in some ways, yet with a lot of weight underneath. I recommend it to anyone, especially as a beach read.
