For some reason it took me ages to read this. It’s not that I wasn’t enjoying it but it didn’t grip me so I kept finding other things to do. I found some of the dialogue quite hard to read, especially Jim’s - I had to slow my reading right down to understand what he was saying!
I was enjoying Huck and Jim’s adventures right up until the last part of the book where Huck’s friend Tom Sawyer comes back. By this point, Jim is captured and being held in a building on a farmstead. Huck wants to free him, but Tom has to make an adventure of it, so instead of digging a tunnel and helping Jim escape, they dig a tunnel so they can get into him and then set him a series of bizarre tasks that he must do to make it a ‘proper escape’ and I felt this was really very annoying!
Still, Jim got free in the end, so all’s well that ends well!

I had fun reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but with Tom missing for the majority of this book it just wasn't as enjoyable. Now I know the book starts off with “Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot", but I still wish there was a semblance of a plot- the middle section of the book with the fake duke and king were rough to get through. To be honest, half the reason I read this book was so I can now read "James" and see how it compares it with the source material. Still a fun book, but I had higher expectations after the first- I guess the sequels are rarely as as good as the originals.

i enjoyed huck's author voice a lot, & his complexity as a character despite being purposely made to seem simple as a result of his social class. this book is definitely best accompanied by an introduction, ANY INTRODUCTION PLEASE (my copy didn’t have one at all ;-;) but specifically the intro by george saunders. i had never read any Mark Twain, and i always see people calling Twain such a comedic genius, & i was nervous i wouldn’t find anything funny—because i don’t find a lot of comedy funny, or because of the outdated humor, or because of jokes at the expense of enslaved people. but i was pleasantly surprised to find that i found a lot of moments very funny. huckleberry’s train of thought, simultaneously simple and complex, shallow & deeply morally questioning & thoughtful, had such a silly & relatable dichotomy that it had me laughing out loud.
tom sawyer pissed me off SO BAD.

I know that Mark Twain was an abolitionist but some lines about slaves and black ppl were awfully harsh.

I finally read Huckleberry Finn, and while I can see why it’s considered a classic, it wasn’t a beloved story for me. The hallmark humor and whimsy the book is known for are undercut by a darker tone, and the pacing drags in places, especially during the long sections with the King and Duke. I found them so unlikeable that I wished their entire subplot had been cut or turned into a separate book. The racism is a big part of why this story didn’t resonate with me; while I understand it reflects the attitudes of the time, it’s still deeply uncomfortable to read.
