This book felt like a crossover between Emily Henry (Beach Read and PWMOV specifically) and Daisy Jones in the Six in ways I couldn’t explain without spoilers. Interesting concept, so-so execution.

3.75-4/5 ⭐️ Maybe it was just my brain screaming at me to never read a book where a mc had the same name as someone I know again, but I swear he said/thought her name more than the average person does.

very weird to me to read a book written by a married couple about two (toxic) folks writing a book together with the idea of "romance"

I adored this book! Very meta story of co-authors turned friends, enemies, friends again and you get the rest. Really beautiful depiction of putting pen to paper about your own experiences and emotions, and how art imitates life and vice versa.

I heard that Roughest Draft was what Beach Read wanted to be and I don't know that I can agree with that. Overall, the book was just okay but felt a little pretentious on all angles. We get it, the characters are authors. We get it, its a book written about a book being written. Even if you can forgive the characters for the constant will-they-won't-they cheating scenario, we end up cartoonishly villainizing one partner while never giving the other a chance at any dialogue in the entire book. Also, they named a character Jessamine...even in a fictional scenario...unforgivable.

actual rating : 2.5 stars

4.5 rounded up! I think I love the use of communicating via scripts to tell the story, because it also gives me insight into the writing process which is really neat. Plus friends to lovers/enemies to lovers. Just shy of a full 5 star for me

Idk how to rate this. Like it wasn’t bad but it also wasn’t good if that makes sense?

I’m so glad I read a tweet from a Becky Albertalli recommending this gem of a book. I inhaled it, as you can see from the just over 24 hours it took me to read it. I especially loved that it wasn’t predictable and that the romance wasn’t easy and clean. There’s work involved in loving someone and this book illustrated that very well. I thoroughly enjoyed even the heartache of this well-crafted read.
