It was ALL OVER THE PLACE! I understand that this is the author's 1st book because it definitely read like it...80% of the time it flowed. The descriptions of the black characters weren't genuine, which makes sense because the author is Japanese. They read as though he made it up based on his own prejudices, what he's seen and experienced as a non-black person. I wouldn't have read or bought the book series knowing this in advance but now I must read all. 5 books in this series. Hopefully the next 4 books are better.

Definitely felt like the narration was unique, and it was an intriguing enough plot. I’ll probably read more in the series, but not running straight to the library for the next one just yet. With a beach trip on the horizon though, more Joe Ide seems like a perfect fit for that.

A neat twist on the genius detective trope. The story alternates between a mystery today and flashbacks that explain the characters' origins, which progressively adds depth without interrupting the main action.

Why doesn’t Goodreads have 1/2 stars??? This is a solid 3.5.

Is it too obvious to call this "Sherlock Holmes in East Long Beach"? I don't read many detective novels, so maybe they all seem like "Holmes in X," and maybe they all have tension with a sidekick.

Regardless, this is fun and dramatic, the writing is strong and interesting, the structure has enough deviation from the norm to be fun.

Worth reading.

A fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes genre. IQ is a driven, desperate kid in East LA who teaches himself to be a detective whiz. We've got colorful side characters, crime plots galore, a hip hop entourage, and even an enormous hound or two. I got a little lost in the shuffle of characters, to be honest, but I was listening to it on audiobook (which is otherwise wonderfully acted). I'd read another in the series.

Interesting mystery that had my attention but I'm not sure if anything more than that.

No magic here. Just drugs, hustle, and muscle. A slow burn 'mystery' novel featuring an interesting spin on Sherlocke Holmes and Watson tropes. What it lacks in pacing, it makes up for in its emotionally complex themes and characters. A slow burn, a bit rough in execution, but well written. Definitely curious to see how this continues to pan out.

Loved it!

I heard the author interviewed on NPR and downloaded a sample. I was quickly hooked. Well worth the price. I hope this becomes a series!
