Title: Untold Mayhem
Author: Mark Tullius
Format: Audiobook

Quick Take: 24 Tales of Madmen, Monsters, and Misery.
A tantalizing blend of horror, suspense, and crime stories; each unique but all dark, disturbing, and violent.
Between the covers lurk:
A tarot card reader who makes house calls.
A disabled man in a miserable marriage who is regaining the use of his arms.
An ex-con who can’t resist carrying out one last home invasion.
Bickering business partners that resort to unconventional mediation to solve their problems.
An alcoholic pedophile forced to spend time in the desert.
A troubled university student who goes on a bloody rampage.
An alert detective who makes an unorthodox decision when he finds himself in the middle of an armed robbery.

Review: Holy hell, what is this book!? And I mean this is the best way possible. I did not know how much I needed this book in my life, until it was there. And having it in audiobook format was *chef’s kiss* perfect. Each story was narrated by the most perfect person. The only thing to make this book more perfect is to make it into a Netflix limited series or something...with no changes to the writing of course. Recommended to anyone who likes a bit of violence and gore with their horor.

This surprised me! I hadn't expected to like as many stories or find so may of them unique and interesting. Sure, a few were gross - like the rapist and a few gross medical ones - but for the most part I found the each unique and I looked forward to each story starting, so I could see what the new plot would bring.

I really enjoyed the audio because there were a few narrators and they all brought an original sound to the story too, so it really felt like each story was on it's own and didn't blend with others or feel like one long chapter. It was just really a great set of horror stories!

1 ★ as DNF.

This book is a collection of short stories featuring taboo subjects, including murder and paedophilia. It also included paranormal inspired stories.

I'll begin by saying the audiobook format is perfect for this style of book and it was a good choice as the stories are very short. While I'm a lover of crime fiction and true crime, this book didn't sit well with me and as such I was unable to completely finish. It made the impression that they were written for shock value and to unsettle the reader; and if this is true, it was successful in that regard. I felt like taking one or two or these ideas and exploring them as a full novel would make a bigger impact and draw readers in more. Overall I felt uncomfortable listening to these. However, the writing was good, clear and suited the quick stories well and I'm certain there is an audience who would enjoy this book.

I didn't really enjoy this collection at all - neither the stories nor the narrators. The stories felt like they were shopping lists recited, with no soul or atmosphere. I feel the intention was to recreate Ray Bradbury and other masters of the absurd but sadly it fell flat for me.

This was a very gory book. I'm writing this review after a bunch of terrible nightmares, so I guess the book is solid on the horror front.

Some stories were pretty clever, but others were predictable or had bad plot-twists. My main problem was having quite a few stories depicting mentally challenged people as criminals or fakers. The story "Counting on It" made me feel very unsettled. It reinforces a bad concept/belief. I'm solidly sure it wasn't meant to be hurtful but I guess having more than one story with the same concept made me notice.

Overall, this was a fun, albeit very gory, story collection.

The audio is played by a full cast, which really makes the listener feel like he's reading a whole new thing. It was pretty fun.

Untold Mayhem is a collection of short horror stories. I really like most of the stories and some i felt were a little predictive. i think audiobook version is better because every narrator did the job perfectly. Overall it is an enjoyable book.

Thank You Netgalley, author and publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review #UntoldMayhem.

I’m not going to be giving stars for this one. Some of the stories were entertaining, but I felt most lacked enough depth to keep my attention. These stories primarily rely on gore or shock factor. It was an interesting collection of stories but not one I’d recommend to most.

Sharp, short, and gut churning. A great collection of short horror that will take you on a ride.

I'm usually all for anthologies. They typically offer a good variety of stories, and if you run across one you don't care for, you can always move on to the next. At least, that's the way it works for me more often than not - and on those off times, I run into one like this one, one that disappoints me more than I care for. There were a few stories that I liked better than others, like the story of the tarot card reader or the one about what comes through a strange hole in the wall, but some took the obvious and easy way to conclusion, one or two that went beyond violent or creepy and were just disgusting, and several were repetitive. There were also some that felt like I'd heard them before. Maybe it was just similarities to something else, but some of these stories seemed awfully familiar.
The bright spot of this anthology was the variety of voices. The different narrators worked well for the various characters as well as the fact that the stories were all independent of each other. Many times, I'm turned off by a reading style or particular voice, but with Untold Mayhem, the opposite was true. The voices kept me listening when I would've otherwise given up.
So, while this book didn't really work for me, I do believe it has its place and would probably appeal to many. Some of the stories are creative and have a little bit of a Ray Bradbury vibe that many would enjoy.
