This is pretty much a modern telling of an Irish folk tale. Set in a far-off time, the 13th child on her 13th birthday must be sacrificed for her village to earn 13 years of luck.
It's very Irish and evocative in the telling, and is either a 30 minute read for an adult or a 2-3 session read with a child. The illustrations are lovely, distinctive and suited to the dark tale.
I loves Bog Child and A Monster Calls and this tale reminds us that Siobhan Dowd had much more to give as a writer.
A lovely little story worth sharing.

A brilliant work of simplicity, magnificent illustration, and a strong narrative arc.

Un libro breve ma intenso, che ha saputo emozionarmi come pochi.
Consigliato a tutti coloro che hanno amato A Monster Calls e vogliono conoscere meglio l’autrice che sta dietro la sua idea di base: ne vale la pena.

Short but sweet.
The Ransom of Dond is the story of Darra - sentenced to die from birth. Tradition dictated that the thirteenth child born to a family must be sacrificed to Dond on their thirteenth birthday, so that the island may be prosperous for another thirteen years. Darra was born a twin, unexpected by her mother and shunned by the village. Now, on the dawn of her thirteenth birthday, she thinks over her life up until that point and the sacrifice she has to make.
This is Siobhan Dowd's last book. Beautifully illustrated and, as I already said, short but sweet. It's just very cute.
