I really need to think about this book because, A) it’s a great story line, well thought out, and descriptive but B) I had a horrendous time actually reading it. I did not enjoy the flow of the writing and the lack of quotation and certain grammatical decisions left me reading and rereading far too many pages.

This was an excellent read once I got into it (a good couple hundred pages it took!). Wanting (needing!) to know how it all ended with Pinkerton and Foole kept me reading. The lack of quotation marks and a slightly confusing style of writing (I sometimes had to go back and reread a sentence because I thought I had missed something between it and the previous sentence) almost made me stop reading. Eventually however I was able to get past the no quotations and did not even notice at the end. I so desperately wanted Foole and Pinkerton to be brother-like at the end, for both to figure out that Allan really loved them. One of the best characters of the story was only ever seen through Pinkerton's eyes - his wife Margaret. Their love story, very understated, was overarching in my mind - one of the major differences between Pinkerton and Foole. I loved the little patches of reality written into the story as well - I recognized a few true stories in the details. I'm pretty sure I saw something about the innkeeper murder story on Netflix!
