i enjoyed this. the first bit was annoying me bc i felt kyla was being annoying by not telling him why she was divorcing him and not giving them a chance to work but once they started talking it made the whole book better

I tried reallllly hard to like this book. I was excited because it’s not your typically romance book. BUT, Myla was so hard to like. She was actually a b*tch. Ryot tried from the beginning to make it work with her. He literally chased her for years before she decided he was good enough. Yeah she had issues just like everyone else, but he never made her feel bad about what she went through. Ryot actually worked with her and got her through it. I didn’t like how Ryot put his job over her AFTER he had to retire early. He made her feel less as a person, and I actually hated him for her UNTIL she decides to be a petty a$& b*tch and make his life miserable. I would have happily signed those divorce papers. Yet, Ryot did everything to fix his marriage. The ending of the book wasn’t the best. It gives you two months after and was about Mylas best friend Nichole..does she have a book? Is one coming out?

This has to be the longest and worst book I’ve ever read. Myla sucks super hard and she has a weird view of what’s acceptable of others while she acts like a freaking spoiled toddler. We all got shit honey, figure it out.
And what kind of name is Ryot!? These crazy names that no one has tend to get me with some of Meghan Quinn’s books but this one in particular was horrible. Also Ryot is like a walking hallmark card who is a millionaire pro baseball player….like those don’t exist and if they did we wouldn’t be that salty about it.

This is likely to be my worst read of 2023 but I guess it may be too soon to tell.

End rant.

No idea why I did this to myself. Got into the Cane Brothers series because of book 3. Started in order and LOVED the first two. Learns that this one, while a separate standalone, is *technically* placed between books 2 & 3 of Cane Brothers, and features them as side characters. Although perfectly fine to read later, my need for a straight timeline took me away from the book I was soooo excited to read and into this one.

That was mistake #1.
Mistake #2: Reading a book with a trope I know to dislike. Which is where much of this review comes in.

Marriage in trouble books annoy me. Maybe my love for happily ever afters is why and I don’t want to read about the realistic issues afterwards. I mean, good on MQ for making a realistic romance. That they had a good start, which we see in flashbacks, very rom-com of them, but then life didn’t end up that way for them.

But this book bugged me. While Ryat, yes, did make his errors, this was a whole miscommunication trope. I feel like one warning conversation was needed. She felt ignored after he retired from the major baseball league and started making decisions without her. When she’d talk to him about her life, he wasn't listening (valid). But then gets fed up and whips out divorce papers only after six months. Marriages go through rough patches that sometimes consist of months and then heal themselves. No sit down, ‘hey, you haven’t been giving me the attention and this is my cry for help. We work on us, or we’re done.’ She blindsides the man she loves more than anything so I started with very negative feelings for her.

She was also so petty. While still living together before he signs the papers, she makes a decision to take everything from him. Sure, divorces get messy, but this couple almost didn’t deserve that messy breakup. And for a woman with a narcissistic mother, you’d think she’d be the exact opposite given her trauma. She claims both vehicles “because she gets them serviced.” (Probably because he’s always off playing sports for his career, but hey…). So he’s without a vehicle, when she has both sitting there? If we’re talking pettiness, I bet it was his money that paid for those cars, so really he could have had a bigger leg to stand on. Then divides all the food, including things like flour, but gets annoyed when he bakes and says the eclairs aren't for her? Um, hello! What makes you think you’re entitled to his baked goods

She started to warm up to me toward the middle when she stuck the deal through even after he signed and well before he claimed he would, but the pettiness really bothered me still, along with her selfishness. Anything he did wasn’t right. Even at the end, as sad as it was, she complains his only focus is the marriage when it should be the other thing. No, because the other thing only affects him because of her. Their marriage is his number one priority, but she was always secondary to him, which is sad. This book was a giant miscommunication trope when it didn’t need to be. If he cheated on her, then I’d be cheering for everything she did, but she seemed to take it all too far. This might have been the author’s way of keeping it rom-com-y though.

OH also, she never tells him why until about halfway through the book. …….. I think he deserved to know why you’re serving him with divorce papers, no? And RIGHT to the end, she’s still humming and ahhing over what to do.

Ryat though, yes again, he did mess up by doing what he did. But oh, he had my heart. In fact, 3/3 on MQ male characters for winning me over and making me like them the FMC. (Cane Brother #3 will break me, I know it). He’s sweet, loves her, and we see him try so hard to get her back. To make her see, while also respecting her wishes for divorce, especially after learning why she wants it and he sees his own errors. He’s willing to give it all up to remain with her.

This wasn’t a bad book by any means. I think if you like the marriage in trouble, healing, and falling in love again, this would be for you.

22 pages in I could tell the female MC would be insufferable the whole time. I've read multiple Megan Quinn books and unfortunately her more recent ones have featured female leads who are unlikable.
