thoroughly engrossing, like witnessing a highway-wide pileup happen in agonizing, tragic slow motion. a detailed account of how failure of political will, lack of regard for human life, and withholding of resources contributed such a loss of epic proportions. the strict chronological approach had a chilling effect, like the ticking of a clock with time running out -- the rundown of statistics every chapter on reported cases & deaths especially.
This book gave a good and detailed overview of the AIDS crisis in the US. However, it was mostly a white account of the crisis and I missed information on how communities of color were disproportionately affected.
Synopsis:
Most interesting view of the AIDS epidemic.
Review:
Excellent read! I really enjoyed the journalistic simplicity of the format. I think it's amazing what these people went through and that the Reagan administration should be ashamed of themselves. This is a perfect example of how public health is ultimately ruled by politics and the bureaucracy. It's scary that "political correctness" and business can so easily trump health and that the geniuses of science could be so incredibly petty.
Quotes:
p.429: "The French had discovered the cause of AIDS."
p.435: "The discovery of LAV, in blood drawn before the nurse came down with AIDS, marked the first time scientists could begin to meet the demands of Koch's postulates...proving that LAV was the cause"
Rating:
5 stars for content. Would read it again.

very informative work of journalism, sometimes (rarely) bordering on sensational. I learnt what the early days of aids were like, which made me impressed with the state of things now.
