La Marche de Mina

Yōko Ogawa

3.79 AVERAGE

while i enjoyed like 80% of the book, because i thought it was nice and the writing style really did it for me, chapter 29 immediately made me feel sick to my stomach for a multitude of reasons.

1. i understand it's 'historical' fiction as well, but the inclusion of such event that paints palestinians in such a bad light was unnecessary. the information is not well researched and it just shows the fact that the author sides with a genocidal 'state', without furthering any knowledge or anything.

2. its addition to the book does literally nothing. its useless and it honestly makes me wonder how did they not remove this from the final book? it's a shame really because the book was very enjoyable up until that point, lmao.

3. what even was the thought process? this one baffles me probably the most. just fucking stupid.

again, this book was a pleasure for the most part, but then it just killed that immediately. i wish, in good faith, to rate this anything more than 2.75 but it does not deserve it. it doesn't even deserve this, i feel like, but i have to be truthful to the fact that it is written well and it was quite a lovely story, if we ignore the part that just makes me gag.

Frustrated that this has a plot point that deserves to put this on https://doesthedogdie.com, but outside of that, yes, this book is meditative and covers an interesting upper class family's experience in 1970s Japan.
