This is an incredibly informative and important book that i recommend everyone reads. Bates offers an accessible and gripping look into the world of misogyny and sexism, especially in online spaces, that shows all the ways in which the world still often times turns a blind eye or even unactively supports misogyny.

This is a rather heavy book, with discussions around sexual assault, murder and harassment, but I think it’s incredibly important to read if you feel you can handle those topics. The author uses a mixture of her own experiences, interviews with other victims, academics and activists, and her own research into the world of online misogyny to create a concise discussion about sexism and what the world can do to tackle it.

It’s a lot of jargon that makes it hard for me to read through as quickly as other genres. Also some of the authors tidbits and sarcasm in parenthesis make an already long chapter even longer. I don’t mind a personalized touch but it’s frustrating when you already account for a longer book. I wish that chapters would have been shortened some.

Also at times it read like a research paper—not opposed but not what I expected either. I did like how the chapters were broken up to describe each type of person, it helped show the variety in the topic. This is my second Dnf bc I could feel the slump coming along but it really isnt a bad book just slower paced

The first half of the book was more informative on how various men’s groups work and attract people - did sometimes get repetitive, and covered information that I already know/live through.

The stuff on young men actually becoming less progressive did give me nightmares

The beginning was slow as someone who is very familiar with online "men's rights" communities - I was like, I'm familiar with incels, PUAs, MRAs, etc. - but the last few chapters I found incredibly informative, especially when Bates talked about discussing these topics with high school students and how the YouTube algorithm explicitly promotes this extremist, misogynistic content. A great read and something everyone should have an awareness of. I did skip the chapter about internet trolls because I have had enough real-life experiences with them that I didn't feel the need to read about them.
