How fitting that this was my 60th book of the year! I’ve wanted to read this for ages, and like a few other graphic novels I’ve read lately, gave up on owning it and just borrowed it from the library.

This is a beautifully drawn book. The softness of the lines and shading are exquisite, and it’s easy to forget this is only black and white. Even the panels were soft, and rarely did Fior use harsh black lines to demarcate things. I noticed some characters are more sharply drawn than others, which makes sense for some of the generational themes he explores.

I was a little disappointed in the story; I didn’t really connect with it emotionally. Some of the relationships are troubling, and the plot just didn’t grab me. I liked the takeaway about truly knowing others at the end, but I don’t think I got that from the visuals or story preceding it. I’ll keep mulling it all over, though.
