The point of the book is to read more. Read more yourself, read more to your children, and encourage others to read more. The way it comes across in this book is that reading is the answer to everything but, really, only if you include the classics.
I agree with the premise, just not the presentation.

Lots of good info but long-winded and a bit preachy.
I love everything about this book. I think every parent should be required to read this as least once after they have kids. The book focuses on the benefits of reading out loud to our children. There are so many! If you only do one thing for your child's education, read out loud to them. Reading this book will change your life, because you will understand how important doing so really is.
I LOVE THIS BOOK. As a kid who was raised by two avid readers, I connected with this book so much. I was surprised at just how much my parents did everything he suggests without reading this book. And that was good for me as I try to pass on the legacy of reading to my son.
I love how inspired I feel after reading this book and all the simple suggestions he makes to help kids enjoy the read-aloud time. It also comes with an amazing treasury of great read-aloud books, so that's an awesome resource.
I wish every parent would read this book so they would know the importance of reading to children!

Very useful compilation of reading research. I often refer to the Treasury for what to read next with my young boys.

I read this book in about two days. I'm an advocate of the combination of reading aloud and independent reading. We do both in our home. The advice in this book is priceless for both parents and teachers and stresses the importance of fathers reading with their sons as well. I always love books that contain pages of recommended books as well. A must read for parents and teachers!
This is really a few different books in one. It outlines the need for literacy in the home, gives strategies (like really, really specific lists of dos and don'ts) for improving children's relationship to reading, and then has huge annotated lists of great books in the back with descriptions of what age levels and interests they are most likely to appeal to.
The message of this book is great, but in my opinion it could’ve been shortened to a pamphlet or booklet. I guess I didn’t need to see all the research to show why reading is good for kids, I believe it. What I found most helpful were the tips on how to read to your kids, not so much the why, and also the booklist at the back is fantastic!
