I stated this book because I joined a volunteer group where we read once a week to 1st graders and the organization recommended it. I'm so happy they did! The stories of how reading aloud in schools and also having quiet reading time there helped improve grades were interesting. It just emphasized the importance of books being available to children.
Reading aloud is vital to getting students to love reading! My high school juniors and seniors loved being read to. I love being read to! A few years ago I had the pleasure of hearing Sherman Alexie, Barbara Kingsolver, Colson Whitehead, Lorrie Moore and Lorraine Lopez read from their works at the PenFaulkner presentations. And anyone who doubts how much people of all ages love being read to, just look at the huge crowds at the National Book Festival!
Trelease's book offers parents and others a starting point to reading aloud with their children. The book offers suggestions of how to do the reading, what to look for in a read-aloud book, and suggestions of some books that make good read-alouds. This is a book that anyone trying to influence children to read should own.

A great reference book for anyone who likes to read to children. Sometimes I flip through this book and find myself just reading it wherever I stop. It has a great section in the back of suggested lists of books for children, and the first half tells you how important it is to read aloud to children. Everyone with children in their lives--your own, nieces, nephews, etc.--should have a copy of this book.
Great book! I read the most recent edition! I loved how it was a mixture of the studies and evidence of what reading to your kids can do!
I just skimmed it but it's one of those books that is a great resource to have on the bookshelf to keep going back to. Wish I had read this when we had our first child!
Really liked this book. Definitely want to own it for the Treasury included as the second half of the book.
I think some of the claims he make are a stretch, but it is interesting to me how much of an impact reading has!

This book tops my "must read" list for parents and educators.
At first I thought this book was pretty awesome. Lots of interesting reading facts and so on. Then the tone seemed to change into that of a bored college professor who's students would rather be asleep. He's obsessed with college and straight A's as the only marker for success he seems to see. Also seriously does anyone care that much about Oprah? I certainly don't. By the end I was bored to tears and wishing I hadn't heard of this book.
Bottom line... Reading to your kids is good. Do it daily. There, you read this book without having to suffer through self important rambling.
