Fantastically tightly written and I love how it quietly unravels. There's so much going on and much to read into and interpret here.

after reading the vanishing half I hoped to love this but it was…underwhelming and kinda fast paced? I am a fan of slow paced books so…I had it coming.

Also the ending left me like wtf

I had such a hard time getting into it. The plot is mostly pushed along by internal thoughts and it was kind of boring. I will say the ending  was perfect. You knew it was coming but so desperately didn't want it to happen anyway.

This is INTENSE. I want to read more by this author. I wish this would have been much longer because the tension was so good. Ms. Larson also has a real gift with phrasing.

This book still feels so modern and timely, especially when read in contrast to The Vanishing Half (not to say that book is not those things, just that they are interesting companions). It is hard to like the characters, and creates conflict with a potentially unreliable narrator, but it speak beautifully and painfully to themes of racism that are still sharply true today.
