- Look, you don't need me to tell you this classic is an excellent book. It's fantastic, full stop. It reads easily for an older book: I could not put it down.
- What I didn't realize is that it's also essentially a psychological thriller, as we watch Irene try to figure out why she's drawn to Clare, and as Clare takes ever more risks to insert herself into Irene's life.
- Also, big time queer subtext vibes in here. I'd love to see a retelling or adaptation that plays that aspect up.

This incredible novella is such a whirlwind. There is so much emotion and turmoil hidden among its pages, much like the turmoil hidden among the time period its set in. All I can say is, remain unspoiled for this one.

I'm not entirely sure what to say about this book other than it was utterly not what I was expecting.
Almost without fail I find old books boring. This was no exception unfortunately.

Well, that happened.

It's a good thing I went into this book mostly interested in historical context and experiences around 'passing', because that was definitely the most interesting part of the story. It wasn't terrible otherwise, but while the characters were mostly sympathetic, I wouldn't call any of them likeable, and I disliked the ending.
