This book is an intellectual feat by an accomplished critic and poet. At times it was dense and went over my head.
The conceit of the book is that civilizations across history can be analyzed and (in a way) quantified by the conjunctions and disjunctions between signs. Paz analyzes a handful of past civilizations this way, and uses his findings to consider the state of western civilization in the late 20th century. This part of the book was most fascinating to me!
