I enjoyed it until the last 50 pages, where it got really dark. I get that was the point, but it was still not my favorit. I guess it simply did not romanticise the tragedy enough for me.

This book was a wild ride. A perfect example of a work where you might think the characters are terrible people but you still want it to work. It is no Gatsby but it is a journey through a loss of innocence and a fairly compelling one at that.

I was ready to give up; the first half of the book is extremely slow and there is nothing redeemable about either main character. But I pushed through and was so glad I did! Anthony and Gloria do get their comeuppance and I began to appreciate the beautiful writing and wry wit of Fitzgerald (I haven't read his other works yet). It's a slog but I was fully invested by the end.
