As Gatsby is one of my favourite novels I looked forward to reading it, but after skimming the first few pages which sounded very dull I left it on my bookshelf for many months. Finally, I decided to give it another try a few weeks ago and fell in love with the premise. Everything in the story was utterly realistic as I also related to Fitzgerald's notion of beautiful ruin.
"Things are sweeter when they're lost. I know- because once I wanted something and got it. It was the only thing I ever wanted badly. And when I got it it turned to dust in my hands." (p.277)
One of the truest and most beautiful quotes I picked up from this novel. A story about the decadence of the 1920's and the demise of a marriage, a young man who is grandson of a Wall Street millionaire falls in love with a New York society girl. There was nothing about this story that I didn't love, except the first 100 or so pages were a little slow and boring.
Definitely not as good as 'The Great Gatsby' but definitely worth a read, and an excellent tale.

This was my first time reading Fitzgerald, and while I enjoyed his prose I ultimately didn't entirely enjoy this novel. I typically love realism and flawed, unlikable characters in literature, and while I appreciate what Fitzgerald was trying to do here I don't think he was entirely successful. The main issue I had with this book is the characters. Anthony and Gloria are obviously not supposed to be likable characters, but unlikable characters should still make you feel something, and for me that just wasn't the case. I didn't love to hate them, I didn't feel pity for them, instead all I felt was indifference towards them. The characters were forgettable and didn't stir anything in me except maybe slight annoyance. This novel perhaps would have had a better effect as a short story, but 400 pages dedicated to forgettable and insufferable characters was too much for me and ended up bogging down any of the interesting and enjoyable aspects of the book. 2.5 stars.

A haunting portrayal of coming of age in a privileged society. I think it is a timeless novel and everyone in their 20's should read this book.
