I picked up this book while revising for my exams, under the assumption it would be a nice, easy read that wouldn't distract me from revision. Safe to say I underestimated Veronica Roth somewhat. I ended up using reading as a reward for 8 hour revision stretches.
I was instantly drawn into the dystopian world: far more so than the (excessive) other dystopian releases. Divergent reminded me of The Hunger Games, while still establishing a unique world of it's own.
For me, the development of realistic characters - heroes who are flawed and average-looking - seperates a good YA novel from Twilight ripoff. Divergent excelled in this respect. I hated, then loved Four. I loved, was betrayed, then forgave Al.
This novel proves that, among the hundreds of YA novels being thrust on shelves to replave Twilight and HP, there are still a few which are fantastic books in their own right and should be enjoyed as such.

This book was okay. It had its flaws but it kept me engaged enough that I would finish the series.

Incredible coming of age story about overcoming selfishness and cowardice. Dense with mystery and fun for anyone who enjoys theorizing while reading. Characters feel real and their actions meaningful and impactful.

The story is so amazing that it just leaves you thinking. And guess what? THEY ARE MAKING A MOVIE!!
