Well that was disappointing. If we could use halves, this would probably be a 2 1/2 star review for me. I wanted to like it and it's not horrible, but it's just not good.
I think the author has some interesting ideas and she probably spent a lot of time thinking about and creating the world of the novel, but when it comes down to it, it's just not very well written. The characters aren't very likable or relatable (in my opinion) and their characteristics are not very consistent. The relationships between characters leave something to be desired as well and the dialogue is often awkward and sometimes laughably so.
It's a 487 page paperback and at page 416 we finally get to the real heart of the matter and the stuff that I presume is the main conflict for the rest of the book series. I might be able to get over it, but it was set up so poorly in the first 400 pages that the remaining chapters feel like an afterthought. So it makes you feel like you just read 400 pages of exposition. Not that the ending took me by surprise either. It was very, very predictable. So much so that I found myself frustrated with the protagonist, Tris, for being so clueless. I know I'm being a little vague here, but I don't want to write any spoilers.
Overall, it has a lot of potential but it just didn't work for me. It was a quick and easy read so I may pick up the next books, but I'm definitely thinking about just skipping them and watching the movies. We shall see.

Four stars for "fun," not four stars for "good writing," "innovation," or "heartwarming complexity."
Regardless, it's the only book I've read this summer that managed to turn me into a greasy-haired, unprofessionally-tired-at-work, non-text-returning zombie for the two days it took to read it.

I loved this book. At first, I had my doubts. I read about the first thirty pages of 'The Hunger Games' and I got lost very easily. But, this book was different. The author, though using first person narratives, conveyed an inspirational main female character in the book. I encourage anyone who loves books themed with a, "cure for society's faults" or a future, sci-fi interest, to read this book (and read the rest of the series.)
If you want to see the movie, I suggest you read the book (or the series) first. The movie didn't make full sense to those who read the book first, though (experience... I really wanted to see Marlene on the big screen :( )if you watch the movie first, you will be confused by all the characters that were not mentioned.

Read it super quick! Really good ending and can’t wait to read book 2! I read this after LOVING Silver Elite and although I liked it a bit better, this will definitely fill the void until the second book in that series is released! Nothing better than starting a complete series!
